NOTES INTELLIGENCE

INTELLIGENCE
Intelligence is the capacity to learn and adjust to relatively new and changing conditions (WAGON1937)
It is the ability to adapt to ones’ surroundings (PIAGET1952)
It is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge.
Social Intelligence   an Introduction
Social intelligence, a term coined by E.L.Thorndike (1920).
Social intelligence is the capability to effectively navigate and negotiate complex social relationships and environments.
SI means an individual’s ability to understand and manage other people, and to engage in adaptive social interactions.
Social intelligence is closely related to Cognition and emotional intelligence. “Social intelligence in just general intelligence applied to social situations”.
A continues pattern of toxic behavior (people feel devalued, angry, frustrated, guilty) indicates a low level of social intelligence - the inability to connect with people and influence them effectively.
A continued pattern of nourishing behavior (people feel valued, respected, affirmed, encouraged) tends to make a person more effective in dealing with others; nourishing behaviors are the indictors of high social intelligence.
Our society puts a huge emphasis on “book smarts” and “IQ” but our ability to build successful relationships affects a much bigger part of our lives.
Meaning
Social Intelligence can be described as an individual’s proficiency at social skills and behaviors.
Ability to manage ourselves and our relationships effectively.

Ø  Memory for names & faces
Ø  Judgment in social situations

"The ability to understand and manage men and women and girls, to act wisely in human relations”. (Edward Thorndike , 1920)
Moss and Hunt (1927) defined Social intelligence as the “ability to get along well with others”.
Social intelligence is a person’s competence to understand his or her environment optimally and react appropriately for socially successful conduct.   ( Sean Foleno)
