Social Intelligence an Introduction
•
Social intelligence, a term coined by E.L.Thorndike
(1920).
• Social intelligence is the capability to effectively navigate and
negotiate
complex
social relationships and environments.
• SI means an
individual’s ability to understand and manage other people, and to engage in
adaptive social interactions.
• Social
intelligence is closely related to Cognition and emotional intelligence. “Social
intelligence in just general intelligence applied to social situations”.
• A continues pattern of toxic behavior (people feel
devalued, angry, frustrated, guilty) indicates a low level of social intelligence
- the
inability to connect with people and influence them effectively.
• A continued
pattern of nourishing
behavior (people
feel valued, respected, affirmed, encouraged) tends
to make a person more
effective in
dealing with others; nourishing behaviors are the indictors of high social
intelligence.
• Our society puts
a huge emphasis on “book smarts” and “IQ” but our ability to build successful
relationships affects a much bigger part of our lives.
